you might need to install to '/usr/share/metainfo/%{id}.appdata.xml'
instead of '/usr/share/app-info/%{id}.appdata.xml'

but I cannot tell the difference but it seems that the appdata
directory is for legacy reasons - new components is advised not to use
this directory.
