I would suggest for both of these issues starting with a clean profile
(i.e. moving those in ~/.mozilla and ~/.config/vlc).
The Firefox issue sounds like a hardware acceleration issue.

The VLC issue sounds like missing files, but could well be the same
graphics issue.
